Truth Seeker: The 5 Second Rule
Motivational speaker Mel Robbins gave a TED talk a few years ago. She spoke about how our brain loves to trick us, and then eventually talk us out of doing the things that we really want to do. We may have an idea to start something new that we have never tried before, or move on to another job, or do something crazy to strengthen our marriage. We have the idea and its exciting and different, and then within a few seconds, we have already talked ourselves out of it.
Its basically what I do at Marshalls. I walk around the whole dang store holding two workout shirts, a water bottle, and bag of gummy bears. I eventually talk myself out of everything and buy nothing (except the gummy bears and a coke). We have these ideas, dreams, and adventures...and we walk around talking ourselves out them. We think about what others will think about trying new things. We think about how we might need to make sacrifices to get what we want. We think about how hard it might be to reach our goal.
So we give up and don't even take the first step to at least try.
If you have never participated in our Truth Seekers here on T+G...I want you to give this one a try. Because I strongly believe it will add value to your life. Grab those journals and lets get started!
...
1. Choose which video you would like to watch. Both videos are essentially the same message, but I love the way Mel talks to her audience in the second video (the longer one).
2. Did you watch at least one of those videos? If you didn't, then the rest of these questions are meaningless. So go back and pick a video, you trickster!
3. Mel talks about the 5 second rule. She mentions that if we have a thought or an idea, and we do not act on it within 5 seconds...its done and we wont pursue it.
Do you recognize this in your own life? Are there ideas that you have had and not acted upon, because you talked yourself out of them? What were they?

4. What things have you been fearful of pursuing? What if you acted on those ideas within 5 seconds? What would it look like for you to act upon your goals?

5. For rest of the day, I want you to apply this 5 second rule to your thinking. When a thought or idea crosses your mind (it could be as simple as having a family game night), act upon it within 5 seconds. Action could look like writing down an idea, researching a destination for your next adventure, or making a phone call. But you are stepping in the direction of what you want and setting aside any fear. List 5 things below that you acted on today, by following the 5 second rule.
