Adventure: Quick Getaway To Atlanta, Georgia

If you happen to be in the Atlanta area or even nearby, consider checking out our adventures that we had on our quick "let's reconnect" getaway. The main things that were important to me for our getaway were we had good food, good entertainment, and we had a fun space to connect with one another. Atlanta is literally just a hop, skip and jump away from where we live, so it allows us to have adventure without having to be so far away from home. There are so many other things to get into while in Atlanta, but here we point out the sounds, sights and tastes of our own needed getaway to Atlanta, Georgia.

Sights and Sounds of Atlanta

Let's start off discussing where we stayed in Atlanta. There is a new hotel in Midtown called The Moxy, and if you ever get the chance to stay there... you should. This hotel will immediately put you in an adventurous and playful mood. When you walk in the lobby, the only place that you can check-in, is at the bar - yes, sign me up! Also, when you check-in, you are given two poker chips, which will give you two complimentary drinks from the bar. Decide to go straight to your room or check out the lobby area. This area is specifically designed for CONNECTION. Connecting with whoever you came with or connecting with new friends staying there as well. There are plenty of games - yes games, all of your favorites from your childhood like Jenga, Connect Four, Battleship and others, but of course they look much more sophisticated, instead of the plastic ones you used to play with. Go snuggle up on the large couches that sit underneath the giant bear mural, or check out the free coffee and snack area.

Many of your amenities including the gym, swimming pool and outdoor bar/patio can be accessed from the sixth floor. We spent one afternoon just soaking in the pool and enjoying our free drinks, and it was exactly what I wanted. We were actually able to have conversation and keep our eyes on each other, instead of worrying about a toddler being in and out of the pool. Towels are provided, bartenders are ready to make all of your pretty drinks, and private lounging areas are first come first serve.

The rooms here in the hotel are very sleek, modern and have quirky details. Our room overlooked the pool and bar, the bed was beyond comfy, and the bathroom was squeaky clean. The Moxy Hotel is only 2 miles from popular attractions like the Georgia Aquarium, Ponce City Market/Roof, and The Tabernacle. We actually decided to try something new, and rented the scooters from Lime and rode throughout the streets, to the Ponce City Market. (A little tip about the scooters... they are $1 to unlock and anywhere from 15¢-30¢, which means it can rack up pretty quickly. In fact, our Uber ride back to the hotel was much cheaper than taking the scooters). I would recommend doing the scooters at least once... I am all about experiences. The Ponce City Market building was originally built in 1926, and was used as a manufacturing warehouse for companies including Sears. The building was eventually restored and is now used for shops, office space, apartments and good food.

At the top of the Ponce City Market, is a restaurant along with an entertainment area called The Roof or Skyline Park. This is one thing that we definitely planned before we went on our getaway. We knew that we wanted to have a little fun, and this was just the place to have it. Skyline Park is rather new and it is located... yep you guessed it, on the roof of The Ponce City Market. This allows you to have stunning views of the Atlanta skyline, a chance to catch a sunset, and having a good time with their many forms of entertainment. You can access The Roof by going to the ticket booth located outside on the main floor (where the food is located). It is $15 per person to be able to go to the rooftop, where you can enjoy the views, food and the beer garden. If you want to enjoy all of the games and entertainment it will be an additional $15 per person. It is pricey for sure, but is worth it for a fun night... again, I am all about experiences.

When you reach the top, you are greeted with a gorgeous view, mini putt putt, carnival style games, bar, a large slide, and a tower ride that takes you even higher. After 5 pm and on the weekends, it is 21 and up, but during the day families with children are welcome! We were sure to check out all of the entertainment, play the games, and go down the slide several times, and I would say it was well worth our time and money.

Tastes of Atlanta
  • El Super Pan: This is a Latin/Cuban restaurant that is located in Ponce City Market, and also inside The Battery at Suntrust Park. We actually went to The Battery, since it was only 10 miles away from the hotel. This area was bustling with people, even though there wasn't a game going on. The menu includes many Cuban dishes, fresh breads, and international beers. We ordered:
Margarita
Imperial Beer (from Costa Rica)
Ensalada with Crispy Chicken (with a Latina Green Goddess dressing)
Cuban Sandwich (subbing the bread with tostones)

  • Moxy Bar: You have to try the Moxy Cocktailwhich reminds me of a Shirley Temple. They also serve food all day as well.
  • Ponce City Market Food Hall: When you enter the Ponce City Market, you will be on the main floor, which showcases the Food Hall. There are over 35 places to choose from for food and drinks. Our tip would be to get there a little before dinner time, so that you have plenty of time to beat the crowds. Most of the places will have a 25-30 minute wait once the crowds hit. Craft beer, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, fancy, casual - you name it... its there. The neat thing about this place is you won't recognize many of these places, there are no chains within this food hall. If that sounds like too big of a choice (to choose between 35 places while its crowded), we would recommend looking at the link above to find places that interest you. We decided to go with my husbands choice - Chinese.
  • The Roof: If you get hungry or thirsty from all of the playing at Skyline Park, there are plenty of drinks and food options available.
